Saturn held steady enough for brief Cassini separation at 170×, and several beginners spotted it unaided after alignment. We ended by framing Andromeda as a diffuse oval above the roofline; patience at the eyepiece made the faint structure easier for everyone to hold.
Haze softened contrast, but the lunar terminator stayed crisp enough for a clean run along the Apennine ridge. Plato’s dark floor read as a calm oval basin, and newcomers practiced sketching crater shadows in two-minute intervals before cloud bands moved in.
With OIII filtration, the eastern arc of the Veil emerged in segmented threads rather than a single ribbon. We compared low-power sweeps against printed chart markers, then traced Deneb-centered hops so first-time observers could relocate the same patch confidently.
Cloud gaps were brief but useful: Io appeared as a fine point just off Jupiter’s limb before fading behind passing cover. We finished with a low southern sweep through Scorpius, noting how atmospheric shimmer near the horizon shifted color balance star to star.
